Abstract

In a powerful assertion of sovereignty, leaders from the Hopi Tribe, Navajo Nation, Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, Pueblo of Zuni, and Ute Indian Tribe of the Uintah and Ouray founded the Bears Ears Inter-Tribal Coalition. Rooted in Indigenous conservation and cultural practices, the Coalition and federally chartered Bears Ears Commission collaborate with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and Forest Service on land management efforts across 1.9 million acres, reaffirming tribal rights to access and steward sacred landscapes.
