2023. Swinomish Tax Authority | Swinomish Indian Tribal Community. Publisher's VersionAbstract

When the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that state and local governments could not collect taxes on non-Indian homes and businesses built on trust lands, the Swinomish Indian Tribal Community moved quickly to establish its own tax authority. Paying attention to both tribal and nontribal stakeholders’ needs, Swinomish developed a taxation system that provides clarity for reservation homeowners, predictability for the neighboring county, and resources to fund local services. The Swinomish Tax Authority cuts through the complexities and contentiousness that often characterize the allocation of tax jurisdiction in Indian Country.

Two easels that have words written on them relating to core valuesFounded in 1997, the Leadership Institute at the Santa Fe Indian School aims to create a dynamic learning environment in which community members not only learn and teach, but are able to actively contribute to the success of their nations. Four themes guide the Institute’s work: leadership, community service, public policy, and critical thinking. These themes are realized through the Institute’s four programs: Community Institutes, a Summer Policy Academy, High School Symposia, and Enrichment Opportunities.

 The White Earth Suicide Intervenion Team was created in 1990 in response to an extraordinarily high rate of suicide attempts and completions on the White Earth Reservation. The all-volunteer team provides many services previously absent or lacking, including 24-hour support for the attempter and his or her family, encouragement of voluntary or involuntary hospital admission for all attempters, referrals to mental health services and suicide education.

2000. White Mountain Apache Wildlife and Outdoor Recreation Program | White Mountain Apache Tribe.Abstract

 The White Mountain Apache Wildlife and Outdoor Recreation Program performs all wildlife conservation/management activities for the Tribe and operates a self-sustaining business enterprise based on the Tribe’s thriving recreation and tourism industry. The Program’s effective management techniques have allowed the White Mountain Apache to gain control over their wildlife and recreation resources and to manage these resources in accordance with Apache values.
